75 years on, salute to trespass trailblazers
Ramblers are preparing to hit the hills to pay homage to the campaigners who inspired their walking movement, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
Hundreds are expected at Hayfield in the Peak District to celebrate the mass illegal trespass of Kinder Scout in 1932.
It was organised by the late Benny Rothman, from Cheetham, at a time when walkers were banned from almost all open moorland. Now the Ramblers association, which since 1935 has continued the fight for access rights, is urging walkers to take part in another mass walk to the summit of Kinder.

South Cotswold Ramblers
2010 is the 75th Anniversary of the Ramblers and throughout the year a number of events will be taking place to mark the occasion. The first of these was a Baton Walk, the idea being that each Ramblers Group carries a baton with them on a walk, starting in early January in the South West and finishing in December in the South East, having passed through Scotland, Wales and the nine English regions.

Anyone who is depressed by the thought of some fifty thousand able-bodied men, in every great English city, looking on at a few others playing football every Saturday afternoon should be cheered by a sight of the just-published "Rambler's Handbook" for 1923.
The mere list of societies included in the Ramblers' Federation, in the Manchester district alone, indicates the hold that the joys of mountain and moorland walking have on the more strongly individual and less sheep-like types of townsmen and townswomen.

Ramblers use Twitter and Facebook to get young people off the couch
After winning the right to roam, national parks and almost certainly an unobstructed coastal path, Britain's Ramblers are facing perhaps their hardest campaign of all. Their target in the year of their 75th anniversary is couch potatoes whose interest in walking for pleasure has slumped.
A recent survey by Loughborough University's school of sport, exercise and health science found that more than half the country walk for pleasure less than they did 10 years ago. Lack of time and "low family enthusiasm", especially among young people, were blamed but so was uncertainty over where to walk.
Sedgemoor Ramblers
SEDGEMOOR Ramblers began their 75th year by holding a Baton Walk, with a historical theme, to the Sedgemoor Battlefield in Westonzoyland in early January before passing on the baton to another group for them to join in the celebrations.
